The Journal of Mechanical Design serves the mechanical engineering research community by publishing research papers and technical briefs that contain new contributions to mechanical design scholarship. Sponsored by the Design Engineering Division of ASME, the journal serves 10 technical committees. They are the technical committees on Design Automation, Design Education, Design for Manufacturing, Design Theory and Methodology, Fastening and Joining, Mechanisms and Robotics, Multibody System Dynamics, Power Transmission and Gearing, Vehicle Design and the technical committee on Reliability, Stress Analysis and Failure Prevention.
From September 2 through September 6, 2003, these technical committees will sponsor symposia at the International 2003 Design Engineering Technical Conferences in Chicago, IL. In organizing this conference the Design Engineering Division has allied with the Computers and Information in Engineering Division so that it occurs at the same time as the 2003 Computers and Information in Engineering Conference and at the same location, the Chicago Marriott Downtown.
Ahmed Shabana, Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago and General Conference Chair, reports that the 2003 IDETC will include more than 850 technical papers and presentations with over 1000 attendees from academic institutions and industry. Please see the conference web-page at http://www.me.uic.edu/detc2003/. Papers published in this journal often have their origins in ideas presented and discussed at this conference.
