In order to achieve high accuracy and surface quality during traverse grinding of long, slender workpieces, multiple workpiece steadies with soft supporting pads should be used. Due to the complex interaction between the workpiece and the steadies and also the deflection of the pads the control of the steadies becomes difficult. Previous work has proposed and examined the potential for a dynamic workpiece steady control method. In this study, the use for workpiece steadies is further discussed and accuracy testing for the workpiece measurement system presented. The results of the experimental validation tests show that the dynamic workpiece steady control method together with the iterative pad position design algorithm is efficient and effective in achieving required workpiece accuracy and surface quality. The control model for the traverse grinding system using workpiece steadies is verified by agreement between the results obtained experimentally and those obtained theoretically. Necessary measures for further improvement are also discussed.
