Boilers designed for combined steam and gas turbine plants are compared to conventional ones. An analysis of the differences between the two systems leads to the following conclusions: (a) Plants with the gas turbine exhausting into the boiler furnace will remain confined to special applications; (b) plants with supercharged boilers look promising in view of the reduction in boiler size, weight, and cost which can be achieved. Such plants should be designed with emphasis placed on low first cost and high reliability rather than on low heat rate.
