This paper addresses the design of closed-loop controllers, which simultaneously satisfy multiple conflicting performance specifications, to Brushless DC (BLDC) motors. In this paper, a linear stage, driven with a BLDC motor directly coupled to a lead screw, is modelled with a linear second-order linear dynamic system. The limitations of the linear model are discussed. A controller is designed to simultaneously satisfy three conflicting performance specifications. The robustness of the controller to parameter uncertainty is investigated. Experimental results demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach. A design example is carried throughout the paper, to illustrate the work.
