The ASME Journal of Biomechanical Engineering continued to flourish in 2022. Our impact factor remained essentially steady at 1.899 (from 2.097 in 2020 and 1.947 in 2019), and the acceptance rate was unchanged from the previous year at 39%. We significantly shortened the time from submission to editorial decision by 44 days (to 152 days in 2022 from 196 days in 2021) due to the tremendous efforts of the Associate Editors (AEs) and Editorial Assistants.
We sincerely thank all the AEs for their hard work and dedication. This year, the following AEs completed their terms: Kyle Allen, Brittany Coats, Grace O'Connell, Raffaella De Vita, and Liang Zhu. We thank each of them for their service. We welcomed a diverse slate of new AEs: Hannah Dailey, Matthew (Matty) Major, Kharma Foucher, Sandra Loerakker, Jing Du, Rafael Davalos, and Mariana Kersch. As of June 2023, the editorial board consists of 26 AEs: 12 women/14 men, 2 Hispanic and 1 Black/African American, and 2 from institutions outside the U.S. The percentage of women AEs, AEs from underrepresented minority groups, and from outside the U.S. have all increased from the previous year, and we remain committed to further increasing the diversity of the Editorial Board. Persons at Associate Professor or higher rank, or with equivalent industrial positions/experience, are encouraged to contact Vicky and Ross if they are interested in possibly becoming an Associate Editor for JBME.
Darryl Dickerson, our inaugural Diversity Advocate, ran a very successful workshop at SB3C 2022 on “Diversity and Inclusion in Academic Publishing,” sponsored by the journal. Arising from that workshop, he and Sara Roccabianca are jointly organizing a special issue for 2023 on “Inclusive Science and Engineering.”
We welcomed Hannah Dailey as an Associate Editor with the special mandate to increase the journal's social media footprint. Dr. Dailey created the @JBMEjournal Twitter account to profile all newly published articles in JBME, as well as the most highly cited article of the month published 5 years ago. The tweets are being retweeted regularly and garnering hundreds of impressions. We greatly appreciate all her hard work. In the coming years, Dr. Dailey will begin to evaluate the effect of the Twitter activities on the page views, downloads, impact factor, and other journal metrics.
In 2022, we published a well-received special issue on Data-Driven Methods in Biomechanics (Guest Editors: Adrian Buganza Tepole, Jessica Zhang, and Hector Gomez) and the 2022 Annual Special Issue (Guest Editor: Ian Sigal). In the first half of 2023, we also published a special issue in honor of the service of the former Editors-in-Chiefs, Victor Barocas, and Beth Winkelstein (Guest Editors: Ed Sander and Kyle Quinn), and the issue in front of you, the 2023 Annual Special Issue (Guest Editor: Joao Soares). Looking ahead, we plan to publish Current Trends in Impact Biomechanics (Guest Editors: Matt Panzer, Barclay Morrison, and Francisco Jose Lopez Valdes), as well as special sections: Inclusive Science and Engineering (Guest Editors: Darryl Dickerson and Sara Roccabianca) and Education in Biomechanics (Guest Editors: Debanjan Mukherjee and Victor Lai).
In closing, we sincerely thank all the ASME staff, especially Colin McAteer, Beth Darchi, Tamiko Fung, Jenna Seyer, and Jennifer Smith, for their year-round support and work behind the scenes to strengthen the journal. We also thank our editorial assistants, Jillian Jantosciak and Layla Nereson, for lightening our load.
