Previous research has demonstrated the usefulness of employing laser speckle and dynamic optical coherence measurements in medical imaging. For example, Briers (1993) discussed speckle fluctuations to detect movement within tissue and Zimnyakov et al., (1997) described a camera system that uses speckle fluctuations to monitor tissue structure. Speckle metrology has been used to evaluate displacements and strains in biological hard tissues, such as bone, particularly in the vicinity of implants (Shelton and Kate, 1991). Kirkpatrick and Brooks (1998) demonstrated a speckle technique for directly evaluating strain rates in cortical bone.
