The present investigation is focused on the significance of pulsatile in vitro flow measurements in the vicinity of prosthetic bileaflet heart valves at the aortic position. With the help of a pulse duplicator system and of optical LDA-technique, mean flow data were collected first. Then the blood flow patterns downstream of the same valve type was visualized in vivo by using a novel MRI-procedure. The application of both techniques under pulsatile flow conditions made the in vitro - in vivo comparison possible for the first time.
