Abstract
Complications associated with the patellofemoral joint remain among the most common causes for revision of total knee replacements [1]. Excessive patellar tilt and medial-lateral shift are signs of poor patellar tracking and are frequently associated with patellar subluxation. Experimental studies have shown that external rotation of the femoral component improves patellar tracking and the distribution of patellofemoral contact forces [2,3]. The objective of this study was to develop a finite element model to study the influence of femoral component external rotation on patellar kinematics and contact stresses under physiologic loading.
