Abstract

A means of including uncertainty in the design process is presented. A design tree structure is developed which considers both geometric and topological change as well as material and manufacturing considerations. The design tree is evaluated by formulating and solving a multi-objective nonlinear goal programming problem. This allows for the inclusion of both hard and soft constraint specifications. Design sensitivities with respect to uncertain parameters are included as goals which enables the issue of latitude to be considered as part of the process. An example involving the design of a welded beam structure is presented with uncertainty in both loading condition and material properties. Various alternative designs are considered.
