Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) combustor liners allow higher temperature operation with an industrial gas turbine engine, thereby, increasing its efficiency. They also improve its environmental performance by lowering emissions. Application of an EBC (Environmental Barrier Coating) on the combustor liner hot surface significantly reduces the environmental degradation of these CMC liners and it also improves the thermal gradient through the liner wall. This study focused on the effect of the EBC on the thermal aging life of a SiC/SiC CMC combustor outer liner using a progressive failure numerical procedure. The simulation results are compared with Solar Turbines’ field test observation. Both test and simulation show the liner survived the long-term thermal aging process. There is no obvious damage occurring in the liner during the 13,000 test aging hours. These data are useful for optimizing design of the EBC/CMC liner.
